Anua Niacinamide Serum: The One That Actually Faded My Dark Spots

I’ve been chasing two stubborn dark spots on my left cheek for almost a year. Post-breakout marks, the kind that just sit there mocking you no matter how much SPF you layer on. I tried The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc — decent, but the spots barely budged. I tried a couple of Korean brightening toners that promised the world. Same deal. Then I picked up the Anua Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4% Serum from the Olive Young in Myeongdong, and six weeks later, I’m actually taking note.

Not in a dramatic before-and-after way. More like, I stopped noticing those spots as much. Which, for hyperpigmentation that’s been camping on my face for months, is honestly a win.

What’s Actually In It

The star duo here is niacinamide at 10% and tranexamic acid (TXA) at 4%. These two work differently but in the same direction: niacinamide interrupts melanin transfer to skin cells, and TXA blocks an enzyme that triggers melanin production in the first place. Using them together gives you two separate mechanisms hitting the same problem. That’s why this pairing has gotten popular — it’s not just doubling up, it’s a genuine one-two approach.

Compare that to something like The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc, which is niacinamide plus zinc (good for oiliness, but not specifically targeted at pigmentation the same way). The Anua formula leans harder into brightening specifically, which is why it’s a better fit if dark spots are your main concern rather than general sebum control.

Texture and Feel

It’s a watery gel — almost water-like when it first hits your skin. It absorbs in maybe fifteen seconds, leaves no tackiness, no film. The scent is faint and slightly sweet, not floral, not chemical. Easy to forget you’re wearing it. That fast absorption actually matters because it means you can layer your moisturizer right after without waiting forever.

I use it after toner, before moisturizer, morning and night.

Six Weeks In: What Changed

Weeks 1–2: Nothing visible. I expected this. Most actives take time, and I’d been burned before by expecting miracles from a serum in two weeks. I kept going.

Weeks 3–4: The two spots I’d been fixating on looked slightly less defined at the edges. Hard to tell if it was the serum or just better sleep. I kept going.

Weeks 5–6: Genuinely noticeable difference. The spots had faded maybe 30–40% — still there, but no longer the first thing I saw in the mirror every morning. My overall skintone looked more even, which I hadn’t expected as a bonus.

I’ll be honest about the timeline: this is slow. If you’re expecting two weeks of use to transform your skin, this isn’t that. But if you’re willing to be patient, the change is real.

Who It’s For (And Who It’s Not)

This works well if your main concern is post-acne marks, sun spots, or general uneven skintone. It’s gentle enough for daily use and didn’t cause any irritation for me over six weeks.

If you have very dry skin, note that this serum is not moisturizing. It’s a treatment step, not a hydration step. Dry skin types should make sure they’re following with a solid moisturizer. On very dry days I’ve noticed it can temporarily emphasize fine texture if I skip that step.

Also, if you’re already using strong exfoliants like AHAs or BHAs daily, be thoughtful about layering. Niacinamide at 10% is generally well-tolerated but high-actives stacking can cause irritation for some people. I use gentle exfoliation twice a week and this serum daily without issues.

Price and Where to Get It

At the Olive Young in Myeongdong, it runs about ₩27,000 / ~$20 for 30ml. That’s not cheap for a Korean serum — most sit in the ₩15,000–20,000 range — but given the ingredient concentration, it’s fair. A 30ml bottle has lasted me well over two months using it twice daily.

If you’re buying internationally, YesStyle and StyleKorean both carry it and ship globally. Amazon sometimes has it too but pricing varies.

The Honest Take

It works. Slowly, but it works. If you’ve cycled through The Ordinary niacinamide and felt underwhelmed, the TXA addition here does seem to make a meaningful difference for pigmentation specifically. It’s not magic, and it’s not fast, but six weeks in, my spots are genuinely fading and my overall skintone looks more even than it has in a while.

Worth the ₩27,000. Actually worth it.
